EPHM is honored to welcome resistance fighter and survivor Maria Spronk Hughes and her daughter Yvonne Ward Hughes on February 11, 2016 for the presentation of their book, The Red Handkerchief – a memoir of Maria’s wartime experiences.
In 1940, the Nazis invaded Holland and quickly occupied the country. Restrictions on all citizens were soon enforced, followed by anti-Semitic laws, property seizures, arrests and imprisonment of Jews and those who resisted the occupation. Two of those resistors were the Spronk sisters. At the ages of 19 and 20, Maria and Catharina would commit acts of sabotage against the Nazi military. Even after arrest, imprisonment and deportation to a concentration camp, the two sisters refused to let their spirits be broken. The Red Handkerchief is their story told by Maria Spronk Hughes to her daughter Yvonne Ward-Hughes. EPHM is honored to welcome Maria and Yvonne Hughes to El Paso on February 11, 2016. Please join us for this rare opportunity to hear from a member of the resistance, who is also a concentration camp survivor.
