Texas Holocaust & Genocide Commission
In 2009, Governor Rick Perry signed into law legislation that created the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission, a state agency established to ensure that resources are available to students, educators, and the general public regarding the Holocaust and other genocides.

Consisting of twelve state-appointed commissioners, the THGC seeks to forge relationships with interested parties to coordinate or modify courses of study and awareness programs, and coordinate commemorative events to further pursue its mission. Commission programs include educator workshops, oral history testimonies, lesson plan and educational resource development, memorials and exhibits, grant funding, volunteer engagement, and a student video contest.

The THGC works closely with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the state’s Education Service Centers (ESC) to provide necessary resources and training for teachers, while also developing projects that engage students. The Commissioners of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and Texas Veterans Commissions (TVC) join the TEA Commissioner as ex-officio members, helping the Commission reach Texans of all ages.

Ultimately, the THGC would like to imbue in individuals a sense of responsibility to uphold human value, especially in the face of genocidal travesty, while also recognizing the horrific acts as well as the people throughout these atrocities that participated in the preservation of human sanctity.
