All People Have Voice: Special Exhibit

June 5 – August 31, 2022

The mission behind EPHM’s Special Exhibit: All People Have Voice is to spotlight and celebrate the diversity of voices and perspectives in our community, to enrich our understanding of one another, and to advocate for each other as Upstanders.

The mission of El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center is to teach the history of the Holocaust in order to combat prejudice and intolerance through education, community outreach and cultural activities. EPHM strongly believes that it is imperative to its mission to connect history to contemporary injustices, to highlight situations or issues today that can lead to division, intolerance or hate, and to stand up for the rights of all to be treated with dignity and respect.

Book Zone Event with Mel Laytner

Join EPHM and Congregation B’nai Zion for a discussion with author Mel Laytner about his newly released book:

What They Didn’t Burn:

Uncovering My Father’s Holocaust Secrets

Thursday – May 12, 2022

6:00 PM

El Paso Holocaust Museum

715 N. Oregon

Growing up, author Mel Laytner saw his father as a quintessential Type B: passive and conventional. As he uncovered documents the Nazis didn’t burn, however, another man emerged—a black market ringleader and wily camp survivor who made his own luck. The tattered papers also shed light on painful secrets his father took to his grave. What They Didn’t Burn is a heartwarming, inspiring story of resilience and redemption. A story of how desperate survivors turned hopeful refugees rebuilt their shattered lives in America, all the while struggling with the lingering trauma that has impacted their children to this day.

About the Author: Mel Laytner was a reporter and editor of hard news for nearly twenty years, much of it as a foreign correspondent covering the Middle East for NBC News and United Press International. After eight years overseas, the prestigious Knight-Bagehot program awarded Mel a fellowship in Business and Economic Journalism, which included a year’s residency at Columbia’s Graduate School of Business. Mel received his BA from the City College of New York and holds master’s degrees from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, and from Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs.

Family Day of Learning

El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center, together with Congregation B’nai Zion and Temple Mount Sinai, are pleased to present:

Family Day of Learning

Educating your children about the Holocaust can be challenging! But the rise in antisemitism, the targeting of Jewish communities, and the current distortions of the Holocaust seen in mainstream media today, are all reminders of why learning about the Holocaust is so relevant today.

But where to begin? How young is too young to learn about this time in history? How can we teach but not traumatize our children? EPHM welcomes families with children of all ages to attend a special workshop at the Museum to tackle these tough questions together.

EPHM’s family day of learning is open to any interested families in the El Paso and Las Cruces area.

Pre-K – Elementary Age: Hands-on activities on kindness, acceptance, and anti-bullying

Middle School – High School Age: Introduction to the Holocaust; interactive activities on key lessons of the Holocaust and survivor testimonies

Parents/ Guardians: Discussion led by EPHM – how to talk to children about the Holocaust and antisemitism; key topics to cover; connecting survivor stories

We will conclude with a guided tour of EPHM for families.

Date: Sunday- April 10, 2022

Time: 9:30am – 12:00pm*

*Religious School will meet in EPHM Library following workshop
